How to Get a Portable Sink Ready for Use

Posted by Josh Kaufman on 5/16/2017 to Food Service

Portable sinks offer the convenience of handwashing water right at your fingertips, wherever you are. Because they satisfy health department handwashing requirements, more and more caterers and other similar businesses that operate off-premise are utilizing portable sinks at their events. To guarantee the highest levels of sanitation, it’s critical that sinks are prepared properly before use. This article will detail the steps that should be taken to get a portable sink ready for use.

Clean Your Portable Sink

The first thing you should do to get your portable sink ready for use is to clean it. The sink’s purpose is to keep hands clean and prevent the spread of germs, but it will be difficult to guarantee cleanliness if the sink itself is contaminated. The sink should be cleaned prior to an event with soap and water. You could also use a common household cleaner — just be sure to check for warnings on the sink or in the owner’s manual about any cleaning products that should be avoided. Most sinks are constructed with non-reactive plastic and shouldn’t have any issues, but it’s always good to err on the side of caution. If the portable sink is new, avoid the assumption that it’s ready for use upon delivery. It’s possible the sink could have collected dust and other contaminants during the manufacturing or delivery processes.

Review the Owner’s Manual

To get the best performance out of your portable sink and make sure you have everything set up properly, refer to the owner’s manual. This is especially true for new sink owners, but don’t get rid of the manual after initial setup. You never know when you might need it to look something up. The owner’s manual will help you avoid common issues experienced by users such as telling the difference between the freshwater tank and the wastewater tank or getting the tanks drained properly.

Purchase Supplies & Stock the Sink

Another of the great benefits of portable sinks is that they come equipped with soap and paper towel dispensers. You’ve just got to fill them. You should be able to use any liquid hand soap, and many paper towel dispensers on units are universal, which gives you the option to either use rolls or folded towels. If you want a list of recommended brands or have any questions about loading the dispensers, refer to the owner’s manual. Chlorine tabs are also recommended for portable sinks. They prevent mold from growing in the holding tanks and eliminate that unpleasant mildew smell. A tablet should be placed in each of the tanks as needed.
